Abstract
Background. The historical philosophical approach to analyzing the theoretical and artistic-aesthetic heritage of the first Russian Nobel Prize winner in literature, writer Ivan Alekseevich Bunin, is interesting for the modern reader not only for its philosophical component, but also for its literary factuality, which allows understanding his prose as classic for the preservation of the heritage of Russian lyrics. I.A. Bunin is a cosmist philosopher and for him mankind is a part of the natural world, a force of its nature comparable to the geological force (academician V.I. Vernadsky). Therefore, I.A. Bunin’s philosophical ideas, expressed in the artistic and literary form, constitute the research aim of this paper, devoted to Russian cosmism through the lens of Silver Age literature. Materials and methods. The set aim is achieved through studying I.A. Bunin’s literary work, in particular his prose of the early 20th century as one of the cultural figures of the Silver Age. The peculiarity of the work of the Russian writer of this period is that I.A. Bunin is a principal supporter of literary individualism, irreducible to the ideology of the main trends of the time: symbolism, acmeism, futurism. The interest of the Silver Age creators in the religious component of human life and society did not bypass him, but it resulted in a section of fascination with the philosophy of pantheism and the accentuation of the Christian Orthodox aspect in the world perception and worldview of the Russian writer. Results. In addition to historical and philosophical material, the article explores such a direction of I.A. Bunin’s literature as his comprehension of the tragic realities of the Second and Third Russian Revolu-tions of 1917. As a social thinker, I.A. Bunin characterises this time with the epithet ‘the days of darkness’. Conclusions. The study of the stated topic enables drawing the following conclusions: the creativity and philosophical position of the writer underwent a long evolution: from the idealisation of the Russian people to the idea of the ‘power of the crowd’ in revolutionary Russia; from a worldview in the vein of Russian cosmism to the religious philosophy of pantheism and the idea of world harmony; the creative destiny of I.A. Bunin is indicative in terms of the absolutisation of the individuality of the creator-writer and in this we see a significant similarity with the position of the Silver Age poetess Marina Tsvetaeva.
